Applications

Flue Gas Desulfurization

When fossil fuels are utilized in combustion processes to run boilers, furnaces, or other equipment they have the potential to release SO2 or SO3 as part of the exhaust gas. These sulfur oxides react easily with other elements to form harmful compound such as sulfuric acid and have the potential to negatively affect human health and the environment. Due to these potential effects, control of this compound in flue gases is an essential part of coal fired power plants and other industrial applications.

Marine FGD

When heavy fossil fuels are used in combustion processes to run ship engines and boilers, they release SO2 or SO3 as part of the exhaust gas. These sulfur oxides react easily with other elements to form harmful compounds such as sulfuric acid that have the potential to negatively affect human health and the environment. Due to these potential effects, control of this compound in marine flue gases is essential to stay in compliance with the new International Maritime Organization's (IMO) SOx emission regulations. Gas Cleaning

Scrubber nozzles are used to remove pollutants and other chemical contaminants from process gases, liquids, and equipment. Scrubbers can remove sulfur oxides (SOx) from boiler exhaust in coal fired power plants, nitrous oxides (NOx) from combustion streams, acids from chemical processing off gases, disinfectants from drinking water, particulates from process gas, and odors from water water treatment plants among many other potential uses.

Quench Cooling

BETE nozzles are used for quenching in commercial and industrial applications around the world. In many processes a gas is raised to temperatures that could easily damage downstream equipment. This can either be by direct combustion, as in the case of flue gas, or by secondary heating. The quickest and most effective way to cool a hot gas is through the evaporation of an injected liquid. Changing the phase of the injected liquid to gas consumes enormous amounts of energy compared to sensible/direct contact cooling. As an example, heating water from 0 °C to 100 °C requires about 418 kJ/kg. Converting that same water from liquid at 100 °C to steam at 100 °C requires about 2320 kJ/kg, or more than 5 times the energy. The energy used to vaporize the gas is taken from the hot gas, thus lowering its temperature.

Packed Bed Distribution

In packed bed scrubbers, scrubbing fluids are distributed over packing material in a column or vessel, creating a thin film of liquid on the packing. As the gas to be scrubbed passes upward through the packing material, it contacts the liquid film providing an opportunity for cooling and condensation or a chemical reaction to occur between the scrubbing liquid and the process gas. Packed bed scrubbers can vary widely in design and can be used in vertical or horizontal gas flow arrangements. They can be used for multiple scrubbing applications and are particularly well suited for acids, inorganic gases, soluble gases, fume control and odor control among other applications.

Spray Drying

Spray drying is used by many industries to quickly and inexpensively transform food products, chemicals, and other products into dried powders. Powder is preferable because it has drastically reduced weight and increased storage life. Spray drying can be accomplished across a range of powder production rates, from a few pounds per hour to over 100 tons per hour.

Humidification

Humidity is a measure of how much water vapor is present in air. The volume of water vapor that can be held in air can vary significantly with temperature and pressure; with warm air being able to hold more water vapor than cold air. Due to this, humidity is frequently expressed in terms to relative humidity (RH), which equates the actual amount of water vapor in the air compared to what the air is capable of holding under the environmental conditions (temperature and pressure) present at that time.
